One equation governs all of this. Heating water takes 500.724 BTU per hour for every gallon per minute and every degree of rise, because a US gallon of water weighs 8.3454 pounds and a BTU raises one pound by one degree.

BTU per hour = GPM x temperature rise x 500.724

and rearranged, which is the form that matters when you are looking at a unit:

GPM delivered = (BTU input x efficiency) / (temperature rise x 500.724)

Most published charts round the constant to 500. That is accurate to about a seventh of a percent and makes no practical difference; this site uses the derived figure because there is no reason not to.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate GPM for a tankless water heater?
Add the flow rates of the fixtures you run at once, then check the unit delivers that much at your temperature rise. The formula is GPM = BTU input times efficiency, divided by the rise times 500.724.
What is temperature rise for a water heater?
The difference between your incoming cold water temperature and the hot water temperature you want. Wanting 120 F from 50 F incoming water is a 70 degree rise. It is the number that decides everything, and it changes with the season.
How many BTU is 5 GPM?
It depends entirely on the rise. At a 35 degree rise, 5 GPM needs about 94,222 BTU of input at 0.93 efficiency. At a 70 degree rise the same 5 GPM needs about 188,445 BTU, which is beyond any single residential unit.
